2008-09-062.1_rc8 and earlier did implicit shell expansion on scriptjames1-3/+33
arguments since all scripts were called by system(). The security hardening changes made to 2.1_rc9 no longer use system(), but rather use the safer execve or CreateProcess system calls. The security hardening also introduced a backward incompatibility with 2.1_rc8 and earlier in that script parameters were no longer shell-expanded, so for example: client-connect "docc CLIENT-CONNECT" would fail to work because execve would try to execute a script called "docc CLIENT-CONNECT" instead of "docc" with "CLIENT-CONNECT" as the first argument. * All external programs and scripts are now called by execve() on unix and CreateProcess on Windows. * The system() function is no longer used. * Argument lists for external programs and scripts are now built by the new argv_printf function which natively outputs to string arrays (i.e. char *argv[] lists), never truncates its output, and eliminates the security issues inherent in formatting and parsing command lines, and dealing with argument quoting. * The --script-security directive has been added to offer policy controls on OpenVPN's execution of external programs and scripts. password if the verbosity was set to a high debug level such as 7 or higher. Normally this would only be used by developers. change the value of an existing name=value pair would delay the freeing of the memory held by the previous name=value pair until the underlying client instance object is closed. Implemented AUTO_USERID using MD5(MAC address(primary network adapter)). Currently implemented for Linux and Windows. 2006-04-05Security Vulnerability -- An OpenVPN client connecting to ajames1-0/+1
malicious or compromised server could potentially receive "setenv" configuration directives from the server which could cause arbitrary code execution on the client via a LD_PRELOAD attack. A successful attack appears to require that (a) the client has agreed to allow the server to push configuration directives to it by including "pull" or the macro "client" in its configuration file, (b) the client configuration file uses a scripting directive such as "up" or "down", (c) the client succesfully authenticates the server, (d) the server is malicious or has been compromised and is under the control of the attacker, and (e) the attacker has at least some level of pre-existing control over files on the client (this might be accomplished by having the server respond to a client web request with a specially crafted file).
